Accordingly, the top model stressed the importance of buying sandals from the Maasai collection “it’s much more than fashion, it is a social deed that helps over 1500 families in Kenya and Tanzania, because all the profits made from sales of this campaign go to this community”.

A trip to the heart of the Savannah

All this humanitarian work has a very special plus to it for anyone who decides to buy sandals from this season’s Maasai collection.  The firm has organised a photographic contest and the prize-winner, who manages to capture the best of the colourful sandals, will be awarded a trip to Kenya for two.

With Pikolinos Maasai, another world is indeed possible.

Pikolinos Maasai Project & Eugenia Silva

A fair trade project for the sustainable development of the Maasai community.

In the Maasai society, women have a fundamental role in contributing to the well-being of community members: they are in charge of building homes, feeding the family and looking after the children.
The different external factors that have conditioned their traditionally nomadic lifestyle have also obliged the Maasai Community to look for new resources to guarantee their survival, preserve their values and their distinct way of life.

Up to now selling handcrafts has been their only source of income used to buy basic commodities which has meant establishing very stable sales channels.
At Pikolinos we are quite aware of this situation and that is why we have set up a sustainable, alternative trade project to guarantee a decent quality of life for the whole community. In collaboration with the NGO Adcam, we decided to get together with the Maasai women, to decorate the ethnic shoe collections with typical hand sewn designs and motifs.

Now for the third year running, the work of more than 1400 women continues to be a colourful sign of the Maasai identity and culture.

Our new commitment means that we can work on an initiative that benefits the whole Maasai community, furthering education and work for a better quality of life, which in turn, helps us to consolidate our brand that stands for naturalness, creativity, humility, consistency and excellence.

Pikolinos sells a product made by Maasai women in Kenya that gives them the chance to earn a decent wage so that they can preserve both their culture and their own life style.

An exceptional ambassador, the top model Eugenia Silva, is kindly helping us out with this project. She travelled to Kenya with Pikolinos to find out about the project at first hand, and she met each and every woman that is involved in it. The photo session organised there with Eugenia looking absolutely fantastic in the midst of the African Savannah will be at the forefront of the international project.

All the profits from the sales of this collection go to development projects; building schools and health centres in the Maasai Mara.

A percentage of the profits made by Pikolinos go to the Juan Perán Pikolinos foundation which has been involved in creating more than 300 national and international humanitarian aid and cooperation projects.

Another world is possible.

New collection Spring Summer 2012

The Pikolinos Spring Summer 2012 collection is a combination of traditional craftsmanship and hand made details that create a unique and original style of footwear. Made in soft, natural, breathable leathers, with hand stitching that is distinguished as being one of this season’s leading fashion features.

Pikolinos has compiled its widest selection of colours ever, summery colours that blend in with the latest trends. The colour palette ranges from ochre’s and browns to toasted reddish yellows with a touch of olive green here and there. All these Mediterranean, bright colours unite us with nature, producing a warm, earthy look.

Young lines are the highlights of our Fashion Confort with heel and wedge heel designs for women and Bohemian style sandals with artisan interweaving. Casual concepts are at the forefront of the collection, there are slip-ons, lace-ups and sportier style shoes made of materials like cork, linen and jute that evoke the natural world.

Do you know about A puntadas? We would like to tell you all about it

On the 25th of January, A puntadas S.L. was inaugurated in what was once the Pikolinos Elche store. It’s a social enterprise made up of a group of women which mainly focuses on textiles and clothing.

“A Puntadas” is the result of more than 3 years work of the non-profit making association Programa de Reinserción de Mujeres-PRM (Women’s Reinsertion Programme) that organises training and creative workshops for women in prison and/or at risk of being excluded from society. These women have incorporated design and marketing from an entrepreneurial point of view, which favours their professionalization and the sustainability of the projects.

The society had the help of the JUAN PERÁN-PIKOLINOS Foundation to set up and start the company.

The whole idea behind A Puntadas is to make top quality products that have appealing designs for the market, which are environmentally friendly and occasionally, in collaboration with cooperatives from developing countries. In order to achieve this, a group of professional designers had to help out and work on the women’s skills in all the production areas.

The most outstanding achievement of this social enterprise is that it has a registered trademark that is well-known on a national level: Malas Meninas.

OBJECTIVES

This textile company was set up with three objectives in mind:

1. Social Objective: Provide those who are at risk of being excluded from society with a chance to integrate and get onto the job market.

2. Commercial Objective: Set up and run a socially responsible and economically sustainable social enterprise that produces clothing and accessories.

3. Consumer Objective: consumers in this new century want transparency in corporate management and production. They want to improve the environment and society without having to take on huge commitments. That is why buying Malas Meninas products, not only means that you get quality products; you also get the satisfaction of contributing to a better society.

A puntadas Empresa Social S.L. has different types of services available for a wide range of clients:

Retailing companies: Signing marketing agreements for its products with leading companies such as La Oca, Little Kiss and Pikolinos Group.

Textile companies: Arranging special agreements to outsource services with textile companies such as Manuel Espuch, Pepe Botella and Max Mara.

Companies with CSR policy: Selling products and cooperating within the scope of Corporate Social Responsibility, just like the Tempe-Grupo Inditex did with corporate gifts.

Public administration: It has the unconditional support of the City Council of Alicante, and Elche and its commitment to procuring services.

Individuals: Everyone is given the opportunity to buy products and/or use the dress alteration services available.

“A Puntadas” has its own online product and service catalogue available for everyone to browse through www.programadereinsercion.es

One again the Pikolinos Group, through the Juan Perán Pikolinos Foundation proves that it does HELP… IT’S LIFE.

New year ahead!

Christmas carols, streets all lit up, red and green shop windows, a time for reflection and deliberation. The end of the year is upon us and surprises us all…Winter starts and so does 2012.

At Pikolinos we are still eagerly preparing the new season, thinking of those sandals that you will wear on your next summer holidays, the shoes that you will show off when the cold has gone away and the spring arrives with the first flowers in bud.

2011 has been a year full of progress. Pikolinos was nominated as the most Sustainable brand for the Global Fashion Awards and we attended the gala that was held at Gotham Hall in New York. This was thanks to our work with the Maasai Community; everyone was very surprised at how a Spanish company managed to organise and run a project like this, in the heart of Africa, where no other company had ever been before. It is something we are very proud of.

Another positive point for Pikolinos has been its adherence to the United Nations Global Compact which makes it the first organisation from the shoe sector to have supported this initiative; once again it’s a pioneer in social policy and sustainability.

Internally Pikolinos has kept up its motivating spirit within its professional structure by organising training workshops to enhance the values and the skills of its employees. Extremely valuable training that has been used to update concepts such as emotional intelligence, empathy, proactivity, assertiveness, leadership, team work and active listening to broaden the outlook of each and one of our worker’s personal development.

And with these tiny strokes of colour we close 2011, with many more projects in mind, in the hope that we can carry on working to provide the comfort of the best footwear, the exclusiveness of the best service and the predisposition to continue on our way to creating a great brand. Thank you for being with us!

Winter’s coming closer.

December is nearly upon us and it’s time to warm up our look to give winter the welcome it really deserves.
Match the Leather Lisboa boots, in Black or Brown with a wool cardigan or a wintry fur waistcoat, a real must this season. Rescue your favourite jeans and complete the country look with a Tote style Pikolinos bag for those pleasant strolls around the city. If you are the type of person who delights in winter scenary, stand up to the cold, take your oldest, vintage camera, go out along the streets and immortalize fleeting seconds in the best Man Ray style. Spoil yourself with small gifts that make each moment naturally good, savour a few hot chesnuts or a hot chocolate that your body will be really grateful for, but above all, Enjoy winter!

LOGBOOK: PIKOLINOS IN THE USA

We’ve just got back from our own particular tour around the United States, five days full of great moments and small steps for all of us that are part of the Pikolinos brand. As soon as we’ve been updated on our daily tasks (the world doesn’t stop just because we’re not in the office!) and we’ve recovered from the jet lag, we‘re going to tell you all about our trip to New York and Florida.

The press conference on the Maasai project in NY was very well received. We were able to share our ideas and opinions with different members of the media (American and international) and also with fashion bloggers. The meeting took place in a Spanish restaurant located in Manhattan (Bar Basque in 6th Avenue), where we presented the new Summer 2012 Maasai collection in fantastic surroundings: A glass-enclosed terrace area from which we could see a moving video about the project that was projected on the building in front. Almost all the members of the Perán family were there on this very special day, along with William Kikanae, the Maasai leader, Rosa Escandell, head of the Association for Development, Alternative Commerce and Micro-credits, ADCAM, and Eugenia Silva, model and the project’s ambassador. We hope that this is the first step towards this project’s success in the USA!

In the evening, we went to the spectacular WGSN Global Fashion Awards Gala in Gotham Hall, a real red carpet and limousine event! It was definitely Swarovski (the event’s sponsor) that put the icing on the cake that evening by dazzling the whole gala with its famous sparkling designs. We got here on the short-list in the most sustainable Brand category, although it was the clothing firm Stewart+Brown that finally walked away with the prize for its dedication to being environmentally friendly and sustainable fashion, congratulations! All of us at Pikolinos feel very lucky to be the runners-up in the most prestigious fashion awards and we will continue working on the development of the Maasai community.
The following day we travelled to Naples (Florida), where we discovered what the first Pikolinos store ever in the USA would soon be like. Even though the inauguration is scheduled for the end of November we still took the opportunity to present the Maasai project together with our Natural Comfort. We went as far as Miami to say hello to our colleagues at the logistics centre who are the service providers for the whole American continent.

We’ll continue with our adventures very shortly, plans for another trip to Kenya are already underway in which there will be many special moments too. See you around!

20th of October, Red Carpet for the Maasai

Tonight Pikolinos will attend the WGSN Global Fashion Awards gala at New York’s Gotham Hall. It is represented by Juan Perán, (President of the Pikolinos Group) Juan Manuel Perán, (Executive Vice President), William Kikanae Pere (Leader of the Maasai community), Rosa Escandell (President of Adcam) among others. Eugenia Silva, the international model, will also be at this event as she is the project’s ambassador and image for the Summer 2012 campaign.

Before the Gala, first thing in the morning, breakfast will be served whilst the project and the Summer 2012 Collection is presented to the North American Media.

Then in the evening we’ll be crossing our fingers and hoping that this project, which has got Pikolinos nominated in the Most Sustainable Brand or Retailer category, is chosen as the winner and that, by doing so, the Maasai women can earn their place in society and promote their children’s education. Thanks to this project, they are starting to have an essential role in supporting their community, which was something quite uncommon in Africa up to now.

ANKLE BOOTS: THE TRENDIEST FOR YOUR WARDROBE

It is common knowledge that a pair of ankle boots is an essential accessory for any woman, a real must-have, but what’s new this year is that they should part of men’s attire too.

It’s the wedge heel ankle boots that are making great strides this season for women. This stylish and comfy winter fashion trend is the best option for autumn. They are available in all the colours, materials and models imaginable, both in the brand name shoe collection and the handcrafted shoe upper models.
Pikolinos women’s collection for the season includes wedge heel ankle boots with fur, (Vigo 843-8751 / Vigo 843-8753), that go perfectly with a pair of woollen tights and a skirt or drainpipe trousers. There are also lace-up ankles boots this winter that can easily be adapted to any women’s own look, with no complications at all. They go well with different styles, a casual day look (Brujas 801-8582) or in the evening they are perfect for a party (Izmir 834-8038F).

Pikolinos has some very comfortable and stylish options for men. There’s the casual ankle boot to wear with jeans (Catania 01C-5270) or perhaps a lace-up, full leather finished ankle boot (Chile 01G-5058). For the adventurous type of man the Autumn Winter collection has a hiking style ankle boot that will catch everyone’s eye (Philadelphia 09B-6897). For those who prefer something a bit more casual without laces, there’s the Philadelphia ankle boot (09B-6895).

Ankle boots are definitely in this season for men and women. Go on, get a pair made of leather and discover how easily they complement your own trend setting style.

The WGSN Global Fashion Awards

With only a few days to go before the WGSN Global Fashion Awards gala ceremony, at Pikolinos we’re getting ready for the great event.

The 20th of October will be a very special day for fashion as the second edition of the WGSN Global Fashion Awards is going to be held in New York. The event will take place in New York’s prestigious Gotham Hall and it will be attended by talented designers and big names from the fashion world that will walk down the red carpet in their finest creations.

Pikolinos has been nominated in the Most Sustainable Brand or Retailer Category for its sustainable development project with the Kenyan Maasai community. A project that continues to make progress with the new Summer 2012 collection of sandals decorated with the typical Maasai handmade trimmings.

Pikolinos is honoured to have been nominated for such a noble project that doesn’t only reinforce our group’s philosophy but also satisfies us personally as individuals. The United Nations Organisation has declared the Maasai tribe as being in danger of extinction and this project has enabled women from this community to actually work in the Maasai Mara, and by doing so, they benefit from fair trade that doesn’t alter their life style.  Pikolinos will donate all the profits made from the sales of this collection (the third consecutive collection since Summer 2010) to the Maasai Community.

We are very proud of the Maasai project and it shows us once again how such different cultures from around the world can still help each other. Being nominated in the WGSN Global Fashion Awards for this initiative consolidates us as a Brand and inspires us as people because it proves that all our efforts are really worthwhile.
